Firstly, with crisis, comes a lot of anxiety and stress and although some relief comes from surrounding yourself with loved ones, zoom and board games, most of us feel a sense of loss, confusion, stress, uncertainty and grief. It also make us contemplate our own purpose in life, further exacerbating overall anxiety levels. Strong evidence suggests that at the moment people with diagnosed mental illness and anxiety disorders will be really feeling the effects of this ongoing crisis.
Worry Beads have been used for hundreds of years by the Greeks. They can be used for helping to ease stress and anxiety, distracting yourself from cravings, improve sleep and memory among other benefits.
There has been a lot of mention in the media recently about worry beads and how they might be able to help people though this pandemic. Before Covid took a hold, I could only really find a few mentions of worry beads in the news, dating back to 2012, 2013 2015 and 2017 and a few during 2019. Now, in March/April alone, there has been at the very least 20 or 30 immediate mentions in the current media.
One journalist put them into his essential – non essential wish list at the moment only last week.
Another reason why worry beads may help right now is the fact that by twiddling and fiddling with them, you are less likely to be touching your hands, face and other objects. This article suggests finding anything to fiddle with such as stress balls, fidget spinners etc right now. Some doctors have mentioned them too.
